FORMAT: This meet is pre-seeded with the exception of relays which will be deck entered. All relays and 400-meter events are timed finals.

RULES: This meet is an approved, observed, and sanctioned competition conducted under United States Swimming (USS) rules and regulations.

QUALIFICATION: First, second and third place finishers in AAU Association Swimming Championship Meets in individual events qualify for the AAU National Championships. In addition, swimmers who meet or beat the US Swimming long course ''BB'' time standards are eligible to compete. The time standard must have been met during a bona fide competition, whether it was AAU, USS, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, Parks & Recreation, etc.

AWARDS: Medals are awarded to the top eight finishers in each individual age group event. Ribbons are presented to athletes placing 9-16.

ENTRY DEADLINE: All entries must be received by Wednesday, July 15, 1998. Overnight delivery is strongly advised. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE DEADLINE DATE OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE.

The Host Committee has spent many hours planning and preparing for this AAU Event. In order to make it a great success, we are asking for your cooperation. It is the responsibility of the coach, designated person of the team, or athlete to return all the necessary monies and completed forms by the deadline date. It is not the responsibility of the LOC or the AAU to make sure all are completed, ONLY TO ACCEPT OR REJECT ENTRY(S) BASED ON DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED.

ENTRY FEE: $26.00 per swimmer. No personal checks will be accepted. All entry fees must be in the form of either a cashier's check or money order and should be made payable to the XXXII AAU Junior Olympic Games. Please do not send cash. No refunds.

ENTRY LIMIT: Three (3) individual events per day, exclusive of relays. Any individual may only swim twelve (12) events during the entire meet, exclusive of relays. Any athlete may only compete in one relay per day, either mixed or association.

AAU MEMBERSHIP: All athletes and coaches must be members of their AAU Association and be able to present their 1998 AAU membership card at CHECK-IN.

COMPETITION This meet is pre-seeded WITH THE EXCEPTION OF RELAYS WHICH WILL BE DECK ENTERED.
FORMAT: All relays and the 400 meter for the 11-12 age group and the 1500 meter for the 13-14 and 15-18 age group events are timed finals only.

No yard times will be accepted. Yard times must be converted to long course times!

AWARDS: INDIVIDUAL: AAU Junior Olympic Games medals will be awarded to the TOP eight (8) finishers in each individual AGE GROUP EVENT. Ribbons will be awarded to athletes placing 9-16.

RELAYS: AAU Junior Olympic Games medals will be awarded to every team member on each of the TOP eight (8) places in all AGE GROUP RELAY EVENTS. Ribbons will be awarded to each relay team member placing 9-16.

The Association and Mixed Relay events are separate.

RELAYS: Determining criteria for Association vs. Mixed Relays:

ASSOCIATION: Only ONE (1) AAU Association is represented on the relay team regardless of team affiliation. More than one (1) relay team per Association is encouraged in each age group event.

MIXED RELAY: TWO (2) or more Associations are represented on the relay team regardless of team affiliation.


PRACTICE: The Midtown Community Center will be open for practice from 12:00 noon - 9:00 pm on Monday, August 3.



CHECK-IN: Pre-Registration: It is extremely important that all entries be received in Hampton Roads no later than the above-mentioned deadline date. ENTRY FORM (S) RECEIVED BEYOND THAT DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!! Of course, we want as many athletes as possible to participate, so please get all entry forms in on time. Again, guaranteed overnight delivery will become mandatory if it is the only way to ensure compliance with the deadline date.

On-Site Check In: Check-in for all athletes, coaches, clubs and teams participating in the 1998 AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held at the Norfolk Scope Arena located at 201 East Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia. There will be a $2.00 fee to park at the Scope Arena during Check-in (registration) hours. Parking is available in the garage beneath the facility and in surface lots across the street. RV and Bus parking will also be available in these lots. Upon arrival at the Scope Arena, please follow posted signs to the Check-in Area. For check-in hours, mapping, and specific directions from locations throughout the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Area, please consult your Athletes', Coaches' and Parents' Handbook.

Directions to the Norfolk Scope Arena:
From the North (Hampton Area): 64 East to 264 West, take exit 10 City Hall Avenue exit, Right at the first stop light on St. Pauls Blvd. Parking Garage is three lights up on the left.
From the West (Portsmouth, Suffolk Area): Route 58 East (pickup from 85 or 95) to 64 West to 264 West, Take exit 10, City Hall Ave, right at stop light, on St. Pauls Blvd, parking garage is three stop lights up on the left.
From the South (Chesapeake Area): Take route 17 North to 64 West to 264 West to exit 10, City Hall Ave, right at stop light on St. Pauls Blvd, parking garage is three stop lights up on the left.

ENTRY TIME The meet director reserves the right to request entry time verification and reject entries whose qualifying times cannot
VERIFICATION: be substantiated.

SCRATCH MEETINGS: Will be held each morning at 8:15 for each morning session. No swimmer may scratch an event to enter another.

DECK ENTRIES: INDIVIDUAL: Deck entries will be accepted up to forty-five (45) minutes prior to each day's preliminaries. Deck entries will only be accepted to fill existing heats. Swimmers who deck enter must be able to prove qualifying standards and pay $25 per event for late deck entry.

RELAYS: All relays will be deck entered before 10:00 pm of each day's preliminaries. Relay entry forms may be obtained at registration or at poolside. All relay entry forms must be presented to the meet director or at the scratch meeting.

SWIMMERS Will have thirty (30) minutes after results are announced to scratch. If you do not scratch from the finals and do not
QUALIFYING TO swim, you will be disqualified from the meet. Make sure you check with the meet referee to see where the scratch
FINALS: table will be stationed.

OPENING Opening Ceremonies for all participants in the 1998 AAU Junior Olympic Games will take place on Wednesday,
CEREMONIES: August 5, at 7:30 pm at the Norfolk State University Track in Norfolk. All athletes, coaches, and fans are encouraged to attend! Competition will conclude no later than 4:00 pm on Wednesday so that all can attend.

Parking on the university grounds is very limited and not convenient to the stadium. To facilitate your arrival at the event, the Organizing Committee is setting up a hassle free transportation system that will make scheduled pick-ups at convenient locations throughout the Hampton Roads Area and deliver you right to the stadium gates. At the conclusion of Opening Ceremonies, you will board the shuttles and be returned to your parking location. In order to arrive at the stadium in time for the festivities, please plan to use the transportation system by utilizing the parking lots located close to your hotel. (A detailed map and parking directions will be provided at Athlete Check-in at the Norfolk Scope Arena). Enjoy the spectacular show without the hassle of restrictive campus parking. Please be sure to fill out the appropriate section of your Event Registration Forms so that we can accurately plan to have enough shuttles at designated locations to pick you up! We look forward to seeing you at this year's Opening Ceremonies!

HOUSING: All requests for housing will be handled by the Games Reservation Service. Simply call our toll free number at 1-888-JR AAU 98 (1-888-572-2898). A list of hotels and areas in which they are located can be found in the Athletes', Coaches', and Parents' Handbook, review this information and then call the reservations number. Be sure to have the following information ready:

* the sport you will be competing in
* the number of people in your party
* the number of rooms you need Your accommodations will be confirmed while you are on the line
* your arrival and departure dates
* your credit card number

Dormitory Housing will also be available at Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University. Ask the operator for details!
