RULES: Taekwondo rules written in the AAU Taekwondo Handbook will be followed.

QUALIFICATION: Qualification is determined by actual competition in one of four ways: (1) AAU Association Championships - top eight from each age and belt division; (2) AAU Regional Championships - top eight from each age and belt division; (3) Regional AAU Junior Olympic Games qualifiers - top eight from each age and belt division; (4) 1997 AAU Junior Olympic Games Gold medalists.

AWARDS: Athletes placing in the top four in each division earn medals.

SPECIAL NOTES: For AAU Taekwondo competitions, only brown belts/red belts (advanced) and black belts/junior black belts compete.

The tournament committee reserves the right to further divide or combine divisions depending on the number of competitors registered to compete in each.

SPECIAL NOTES: For AAU Taekwondo Competitions. Advanced Divisions consist of both Red and Brown Belts. Black Belt Divisions are meant to include Junior Black as well. If your school or club uses any other belt ranking order or system, your athlete should conform to the above-mentioned criteria.

Olympic Sparring Division is Modified WTF (Olympic) type sparring. If your athlete has not been trained and had experience with this type of sparring, NOW is NOT the time to begin.


ENTRY DEADLINE: Entries must be received by Wednesday, July 15, 1998. No applications will be accepted or processed which are received after this date. OVERNIGHT EXPRESS MAIL is highly recommended in order to meet this application deadline. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE DEADLINE DATE OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE.

The Host Committee and the AAU have spent many hours planning and preparing for this AAU Event. In order to make it a great success, we are asking for your cooperation. It is the responsibility of the parent, coach, instructor, and athlete to ensure that the application is in on time and complete in every detail. Incomplete applications (missing age, belt, weight, etc.) WILL BE REJECTED!

ENTRY FEE: One (1) or two (2) events $60.00
Three (3) individual events $70.00
Team Forms $45.00 per three (3) member team

The three person synchronized forms team competition requires a separate entry form and entry fee.

No personal checks will be accepted. All entry fees must be in the form of either a cashier's check or money order and should be made payable to the XXXII AAU Junior Olympic Games. Do not send cash.

AAU MEMBERSHIP: All athletes, coaches, and officials must be members of AAU and be able to present their AAU membership card on demand.
In addition, all athletes should be prepared to produce birth certificates at Athlete Check-in and/or at the competition site.

COACHES/OFFICIALS: All coaches and officials must attend the appropriate NATIONAL clinic to be held on Wednesday afternoon, August 5, beginning at 12:00 pm. The clinics will take place at the Taekwondo Headquarters Hotel (Omni Waterside Hotel in Norfolk). The clinics will take place in Stratford Hall at the Hotel. The only exception will be those coaches and officials who have attended the National Clinic held in conjunction with the 1998 National AAU Youth and Adult Taekwondo Championship in Boca Raton, FL. The National Clinic Fee will be $20.00 and include your AAU Taekwondo Coach's Pass to get on the competition floor. Checks should be made payable to the National AAU Taekwondo Fund and paid at the clinic to the clinic instructor only. This clinic fee is separate from any and all other fees charged by the Host Organizing Committee in order to obtain coaches'/athletes' credentials. In addition, those officials or coaches who do not have the current AAU Taekwondo handbook will be required to purchase same at $10.00. These handbooks may also be ordered directly from the AAU National Headquarters in Orlando, Florida.

Please Note: All coaches must have been previously certified and worked at least one AAU Taekwondo sanctioned qualifier in order to coach or work at this event. Unless you can substantiate that you have met these criteria (i.e., present your license book), you will not be allowed into the National Clinic or onto the competition floor!!!

RULES: AAU Taekwondo rules shall apply to all Taekwondo competition at the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Again, please refer to the AAU Taekwondo Handbook.

QUALIFICATION: Qualification to the AAU Junior Olympic Games must be determined by actual competition. Qualification may only be determined through: (A) AAU Association Championships, (B) AAU Regional Championships, (C) AAU Regional Junior Olympic Games Qualifiers, or D) the prior year's AAU Junior Olympic Games.

A, B, and C above may qualify the top eight (8) athletes from each appropriate age and belt division category to participate in the AAU Junior Olympic Games. Last year's AAU Junior Olympic Games Gold Medalists are also eligible to participate.

AWARDS: AAU Junior Olympic Games medals will be awarded to the top four (4) competitors in each division competed.

CHECK-IN & WEIGH-IN: All AAU Taekwondo athletes must also check-in and weigh-in with the AAU Taekwondo Committee on Wednesday, August 5th between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm at the Norfolk Scope Arena. NO EXCEPTIONS! At that time your weight AND what events you have entered will be verified by the Committee. Failure to weigh-in will prohibit you from participating in any sparring event. Those who fail to "make weight" will be automatically disqualified from sparring competition (i.e. if you register as a light weight you MUST come in under the weight as prescribed for your age bracket according to AAU Taekwondo rule or you will be disqualified).

All Check-in and weigh-in activity for athletes participating in the 1998 AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held at the Norfolk Scope Arena located at 201 East Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia. There will be a $2.00 fee to park at the Scope Arena during registration hours. Parking is available in the garage beneath the facility and in surface lots across the street. RV and Bus parking will also be available in these lots. Upon arrival at the Scope Arena, please follow posted signs to the Check-in Area. For check-in hours, mapping, and specific directions from locations throughout the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Area, please consult your Athletes', Coaches' and Parents' Handbook.

Athletes should first check-in with AAU Junior Olympic Games Personnel and pick up their credentials, t-shirt, certificate, and goody bag prior to check-in/weigh-in with the Taekwondo Committee.

Directions to the Norfolk Scope Arena:
From the North (Hampton Area): 64 East to 264 West, take exit 10 City Hall Avenue exit, Right at the first stop light on St. Pauls Blvd. Parking Garage is three lights up on the left.
From the West (Portsmouth, Suffolk Area): Route 58 East (pickup from 85 or 95) to 64 West to 264 West, Take exit 10, City Hall Ave, right at stop light, on St. Pauls Blvd, parking garage is three stop lights up on the left.
From the South (Chesapeake Area): Take route 17 North to 64 West to 264 West to exit 10, City Hall Ave, right at stop light on St. Pauls Blvd, parking garage is three stop lights up on the left.

BIRTH CERTFICATE: All athletes should be prepared to produce a birth certificate at Taekwondo Committee Check-in or at the competition site.

UNIFORMS: All contestants must wear a clean, white dobok. Patches will be limited to the AAU Taekwondo patch which must be worn on the upper left breast. Other than this one patch, the uniform must be totally free of any other embellishment including school logo or any colored trim with the exception of corporate brand names (i.e., Adidas, USA Spirits, etc.). See AAU Taekwondo Handbook for further description.
MANDATORY
EQUIPMENT: Point Sparring: All competitors must wear full hand and foot protectors (RED foam dipped or vinyl only), chest protector, FULL headgear (RED or WHITE FOAM dipped only), and mouthguard. Male competitors must also wear groin cup and supporter.

International Sparring: All competitors must wear an olympic style chest protector, headgear, shin protectors (white only), forearm protectors (white only) and mouthguard. Males are also required to wear a protective cup.

OPENING CEREMONIES: Opening Ceremonies will be held at Norfolk State University's Track Stadium on Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30pm. Parking on the university grounds is very limited and not convenient to the stadium. To facilitate your arrival at the event, the Organizing Committee is setting up a hassle free transportation system that will make scheduled pick-ups at convenient locations throughout the Hampton Roads Area and deliver you right to the stadium gates. At the conclusion of Opening Ceremonies, you will board the shuttles and be returned to your parking location. In order to arrive at the stadium in time for the festivities, please plan to use the transportation system by utilizing the parking lots located close to your hotel. (A detailed map and parking directions will be provided at Athlete Check-in at the Norfolk Scope Arena). Enjoy the spectacular show without the hassle of restrictive campus parking. Please be sure to fill out the appropriate section of your Event Registration Forms so that we can accurately plan to have enough shuttles at designated locations to pick you up! We look forward to seeing you at this year's Opening Ceremonies!

HOUSING: All requests for housing will be handled by the Games Reservation Service. Simply call our toll free number at 1-888-JR AAU 98 (1-888-572-2898). A list of hotels and areas in which they are located can be found in the Athletes', Coaches', and Parents' Handbook, review this information and then call the reservations number. Be sure to have the following information ready:

· the sport you will be competing in
· the number of people in your party
· the number of rooms you need
· your arrival and departure dates
· your credit card number

Your accommodations will be confirmed while you are on the line.

Dormitory Housing will also be available at Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University. Ask the operator for details!
