FORMAT: A pool play system is administered throughout AAU Basketball National Championships. The top two teams from each pool advance to a single elimination championship bracket.

RULES: The 1998 National Championship complies NCAA Men's Basketball Rules except where amended by the AAU Basketball Handbook. The 35-second shot clock will be used.

QUALIFICATION: Teams qualify for this tournament based on their showing and the number of teams in the association tournament. For example: the first place team advances if there is a minimum of three teams in the tournament; two teams advance if six teams participate; three for nine to 15 teams; four for 16-23 teams and five for 24 or more.

AWARDS: National AAU trophies and medals are presented to the top four teams. Fifteen first-team all-Americans will be named.
