FORMAT: A pool play system is used in all AAU National Baseball Championships.
The size of each pool is based upon the number of entries.
RULES: National High School Federation rules are enforced. Each game will be seven innings in length. There is no limit on the number of innings pitched per player. Designated hitter and re-entry rules apply to starting players. The 10-run rule is in effect except in medal games. QUALIFICATION: Gold medal teams from each AAU Association received an automatic bid into the tournament. The size of the association championship determined the number of teams that qualify for the national championship. For example: If the association championship contains six to 15 teams, the first and second place teams qualify; 16-23 teams allows first, second and third place to advance; etc. No team below a fourth place finish advanced to the national championship. AWARDS: Team trophies and individual AAU Junior Olympic Games medals/trophies will be awarded to the top eight (8) teams in the medal round. Twenty players will be chosen to the all-tournament team along with the baseball winner of the Joel Ferrell AAU Junior Olympic Games Award. DATES: Team Check-in/Team Meeting/Practice: Thursday, July 30 Competition: Friday, July 31 - Friday, August 7 Rain date: Saturday, August 8 The AAU Age 16:Under Division National Baseball Championship is played as part of the XXXII Junior Olympic Games. The 1998 Championship will be played at the following locations. FACILITIES: Old Dominion University, Hampton Boulevard north of 43rd Street, Norfolk Harbor Park (Championship Only), 150 Park Ave., Downtown Norfolk Nansemond River High School, 3301 Nanesmond Parkway, Suffolk Churchland High School, 430 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth First Colonial High School, 1272 Mill Dam Road, Virginia Beach Oscar Smith High School, 1994 Tiger Drive off of Great Bridge Boulevard west of Battlefield Boulevard, Chesapeake Greenbrier Christian Academy, 311 Kempsville Road, West of Greenbriar Parkway, Chesapeake AGE DIVISION: 16:Under ENTRY DEADLINE: All entry information must be RECEIVED BY WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 1998. All entry fees must be in the form of either a cashier's check or money order. No personal checks will be accepted. Please make payable to: XXXII AAU JUNIOR OLYMPIC GAMES. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE DEADLINE DATE OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO COMPETE. OVERNIGHT DELIVERY IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. The Host Committee has spent many hours planning and preparing for this AAU Event. In order to make it a great success, we are asking for your cooperation. It is the responsibility of the coach, designated person of the team, or athlete to return all the necessary monies and completed forms by the deadline date. The responsibility of the Host and the AAU is ONLY TO ACCEPT OR REJECT ENTRY(S) BASED ON DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED AND NOT TO MAKE SURE ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE MET. ENTRY FEE: $500.00 per team. Make cashier check or money order payable to XXXII AAU Junior Olympic Games. AAU MEMBERSHIP: All athletes, coaches and batpersons must be members of their AAU Association and must present their AAU membership card at Team Check-in. In addition, all teams must be registered as an AAU Club with their AAU Association and must comply with the regulations of the AAU Code. COMPETITION A double pool play to medal round bracket play format is FORMAT: used in all AAU National Baseball Championships. The exact format of the tournament and the size of each pool will depend on the number of entries and other extenuating circumstances. NOTE: Once there are only two teams left, the next game will be the championship game no matter who wins. (This is the same format as used in the College World Series in order to determine the championship team.) RULES OF PLAY: 1998 High School Baseball Rules as published by the National Federation of State High School Associations except where modified. Games will be seven (7) innings in length. A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of ten (10) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player may not pitch the next calendar day. Designated hitter and re-entry rules will apply to any starting player. The 10-run rule will be in effect except in bronze and gold medal games. TEAM Gold medal teams from each AAU Association qualifying QUALIFICATION: tournament automatically gain a berth into the AAU 16-Under National Championship. If an AAU Association Championship consists of less than six (6) teams, only the gold medalist may advance. If an AAU Association Championship consists of six (6) to fifteen (15) teams, the gold and silver medalists may advance. If an AAU Association Championship consists of sixteen (16) to twenty-three (23) teams, the gold, silver, and bronze medalists may advance. If an AAU Association Championship consists of twenty-four (24) or more teams, the gold, silver, bronze and fourth place teams may advance. No teams below a fourth-place finish can advance to a National Championship unless the AAU National Baseball Executive Committee approves. In the event there is no qualifying tournament, the AAU Association President and AAU Association Baseball Chair may jointly request an At-Large packet from AAU National Headquarters. For more details, please refer to the 1998 AAU Baseball Handbook. INDIVIDUAL A player may play in only one (1) age division (Association PLAYER ELGIBILITY: Championship qualifier and corresponding National competition per membership year and must remain in the same age division throughout Association and National competitions A team member on the roster of an Association team that qualifies for the National Championship must remain on the roster of that team and is ineligible for National Invitational Championship competition. A team member on the roster of an Association team that commits to National Invitational Championship competition is ineligible for National Championship competition. All players must be on site and registered for competition prior to the team's final game in the initial round of pool play in order to be eligible for subsequent rounds of pool play, championship bracket play, or consolation bracket play. Any questions pertaining to the eligibility of a player or team shall be directed to the National Baseball Committee representative at the championship. No member of the Local Organizing Committee shall have the authority to rule on player or team eligibility. If a player is found to be ineligible prior to the start of the tournament, the player will be expelled from the tournament. If a player is found to be ineligible after the tournament has begun, the entire team will be expelled from the tournament. Coaches are responsible to see that their players and team meet all eligibility requirements. CHECK-IN: Pre-Registration: It is extremely important that all entries be received in Norfolk no later than the previously mentioned deadline date. ALL TEAM ENTRY FORM(S) RECEIVED BEYOND THAT DATE WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!! Of course, we want as many athletes as possible to participate, so please get all entry forms in on time. Again, guaranteed overnight delivery will become mandatory if it is the only way to ensure compliance with the deadline date. On-Site Check In: Check-in for all teams participating in the 1998 AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held at the Norfolk Scope Arena located at 201 East Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, Virginia. There will be a $2.00 fee to park at the Scope Arena during Check-in (registration) hours. Parking is available in the garage beneath the facility and in surface lots across the street. RV and Bus parking will also be available in these lots. Upon arrival at the Scope Arena, please follow posted signs to the Check-in Area. For check-in hours mapping, and specific directions from locations throughout the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Area, please consult your Athletes', Coaches' and Parents' Handbook. Directions to the Norfolk Scope: From the North (Hampton Area): 64 East to 264 West, take exit 10 City Hall Avenue exit, Right at the first stop light on St. Pauls Blvd. Parking Garage is three lights up on the left. From the West (Portsmouth, Suffolk Area): Route 58 East (pickup from 85 or 95) to 64 West to 264 West, Take exit 10, City Hall Ave, right at stop light, on St. Pauls Blvd, parking garage is three stop lights up on the left. From the South (Chesapeake Area): Take route 17 North to 64 West to 264 West to exit 10, City Hall Ave, right at stop light on St. Pauls Blvd, parking garage is three stop lights up on the left. All players will be required to present a photo ID to verify identity at Team Check-in at the Norfolk Scope Arena. PLAYER AGE All players must have been born on or after August 1, 1981. Proof of DETERMINATION: age will be required at time of entry. Only the following documents are acceptable: a) a copy of birth record from the STATE, COUNTY OR MUNICIPAL BUREAU OF VITAL STATISTICS. b) a copy of the delayed registration of birth (originals may be requested) if the athlete's birth was not recorded on the day of birth, issued by any of the same bodies listed. c) Consular Service Form FS-240, "Report of Birth," issued by the US State Department. d) Immigration and Naturalization Forms I-151 and I-25 and Form 43-R311-7, issued by the United States Department of Justice. HOSPITAL RECORDS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE !!! PLAYER ROSTER: Rosters at the AAU National Championship are limited to a maximum of 20 players. A team advancing to an AAU National Championship tournament from at least a three (3) team Association Championship shall be allowed to add or replace up to five (5) players on its AAU Association roster (to a team maximum of 20), provided the replacement players and players being added were listed on the roster of a team participating in the same age division in the same Association Championship. TEAM PHOTO: A team photo is mandatory for each team with all players identified. If a player is not in the team photo, an individual photo of that player must accompany the entry. COACHES: Each team is entitled to a maximum of three (3) bench personnel (head coach and assistant coaches) and two (2) batpersons. Each individual must be a registered AAU member. The daily tournament admission fee for these coaches, athletes, and batpersons is included in the team entry fee. BATPERSONS: No more than two (2) batpersons may be registered by each team, provided that each youth is at least nine ( 9) years of age at the time of the tournament and is a registered AAU member. Batpersons must wear approved batting helmets while in live-ball areas. COACHES' MEETING: THURSDAY, JULY 30 at 8:00: The head coach from each team is required to attend a coaches' meeting which will be held at the Norfolk Scope Arena. AWARDS: Team trophies and individual AAU Junior Olympic Games medals will be awarded to the top eight (8) teams in the medal round. Team trophies will be awarded to the top two (2) teams in the consolation bracket. In addition, a twenty (20) member All-Tournament Team will be selected along with the baseball winner of the Joel Ferrell AAU Junior Olympic Games Award. The presentation of awards will be held immediately following completion of championship bracket games. HOUSING: All requests for housing will be handled by the Games Reservation Service. Simply call our toll free number at 1-888-JR AAU 98 (1-888-572-2898). A list of hotels and areas in which they are located can be found in the Athletes', Coaches', and Parents' Handbook. Review this information and then call the reservations number. Be sure to have the following information ready: · the sport you will be competing in · the number of people in your party · the number of rooms you need · your arrival and departure dates · your credit card number Your accommodations will be confirmed while you are on the line. Dormitory Housing will also be available at Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University. Ask the operator for details! The Headquarters Hotel for Baseball is: The Hampton Inn, Chesapeake OPENING CEREMONIES: The 1998 AAU Junior Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies will be held at Norfolk State University's Track Stadium on Wednesday, August 5 at 7:30 pm. Parking on the university grounds is very limited and not convenient to the stadium. To facilitate your arrival at the event, the Organizing Committee is setting up a hassle free transportation system that will make scheduled pick-ups at convenient locations throughout the Hampton Roads Area and deliver you right to the stadium gates. At the conclusion of Opening Ceremonies, you will board the shuttles and be returned to your parking location. In order to arrive at the stadium in time for the festivities, please plan to use the transportation system by utilizing the parking lots located close to your hotel. (A detailed map and parking directions will be provided at Athlete Check-in at the Norfolk Scope Arena). Enjoy the spectacular show without the hassle of restrictive campus parking. Please be sure to fill out the appropriate section of your Event Registration Forms so that we can accurately plan to have enough shuttles at designated locations to pick you up! INSIGNIA: The official AAU Baseball cloth emblem must be affixed to the left sleeve of the primary uniform jersey worn by each player and coach. CONDUCT: Players' and coaches' conduct should be above reproach, both on and off the diamond. Any misconduct will result in disqualification from the championship. Coaches listed on the official team roster will be responsible for the conduct of their players and for any damages incurred to the motel(s) or facilities used by their roster players. Any player or coach who is ejected from a game will also be disqualified from that team's following game. The second occurrence during the tournament results in suspension for the remainder of the tournament as well as possible imposition of further sanctions. PROTESTS: Protests must be made verbally with the umpire by the offended team at the time of the play and before the next pitch. A fee of $100.00 cash (refunded if upheld) must accompany the protest. All decisions of the protest committee shall be final. Only decisions involving the misinterpretation or misapplication of a rule may be protested. No protest shall be allowed in matters involving solely the officials' judgment.
