To calculate average ages, add all the athletes' ages together, then divide the sum by the number of athletes in the group. Any average ending in a .5 or higher must be rounded up to the next whole number. Athletes participating in a group may not be any older than the next higher age group they are competing in. Therefore, if a small twirling corps' average age were 9.2, they would compete in the 0-9 division and could not have any one older than 13 years old in the group. But if a small twirling corps' average age were 9.5, they would compete in the 10-13 division and could have 20 year olds in the group.
*The National Competition Committee reserves the right to combine age divisions in group competition where there are less than 5 entries in an age division.
AGEDETERMINATION: Determined by the athlete's age at the time of the AAU National Championships first day of competition, (August 4, 1999).
